Cost of living adjustment for 2020

The Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) on Yellow Pages Group’s pensions is based on the increase in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) over a 12 month period ending on October 31 of each year.

For pensioners under 65 years of age, this number is rounded         to the nearest whole number, to a maximum of 2%.
For pensioners 65 years and over, the rule of our pension plan         states that the COLA should be the greater of:
-100% of the increase in the CPI (rounded to the nearest whole         number), to a maximum of 2%
   or
-60% of the increase in the CPI (rounded to the nearest two         decimal points), to a maximum of 4%.

On November 20, Statistics Canada released the CPI data for the last twelve months. According to Statistics Canada, the CPI rose 1.9% between October 2018 and October 2019 for Canada as a whole.

Based on this, the Cost of Living Adjustment on our Yellow Pages Group pensions should be 2% in 2020. The increase will appear on the January pension payment.

QPIP
November
Update

Meeting with 2 MNA* from the Parti Québécois (PQ) for the QPIP in Quebec City

Following the meeting held in Jonquière on September 30, 2019 and at the request of the Sylvain Gaudreault (MNA = Member of National Assembly), a meeting took place on October 31, 2019 between members of the QPIP committee (J.P. Joanisse, Denis Bernard, Claude Sénéchal and Han van der Toorn) and Sylvain Gaudreault with Sylvain Roy, both MNA representing PQ.
(* MNA = Member of National Assembly)

The purpose of this meeting was:

Provide a status of what the QPIP committee did so far.

Determine the type of involvement to support the implementation of the QPIP            project of these 2 MNA on behalf of PQ.

Both Sylvain Gaudreault and Sylvain Roy agreed to support the implementation of the QPIP project and Sylvain Roy will lead this project at the National assembly as well as any committee required to get this project on track.

In order to get statistics which Retraite Québec did not provide to the QPIP committee, we will provide them with all emails requesting statistics from Retraite Québec (these emails were supplied on November 1, 2019). Sylvain Roy will take action to get the required statistics.

In view to bring this project in the media by the PQ, they requested from us to find witnesses impacted by the reduction of their pension, who will be able to attend a press conference. With the cooperation of 2 retirees associations, on November 1, 2019, I was able to provide names of witnesses (one from White Birch and one from Groupe Capitales Médias)

It was agreed that the QPIP committee and MNA of PQ will continue to keep in touch on a regular basis.

QPIP and Quebec Solidaire

Following the email from members requesting a meeting with the provincial government to obtain the implementation of the QPIP project, Mr. Vincent Marissal, MNA for Quebec Solidaire continued to confirm his support for the implementation of the QPIP

ERT Update

Email Revendication Tool (ERT)

The ERT's CAMPAIGN for the QPIP began on September 18 and as of November 4 at noon, 691 members participated in this campaign (YPPG participation = 122 members representing 46% of all YPPG members potentially entitled to QPIP).

This ERT campaign for the QPIP did make the Minister of Finance send an email basically indicating that they do not support the implementation of the QPIP, but Retraite Québec (RQ) since 2015 offer an option to retirees to potentially reduce pension loss due to bankruptcy.

At a conference in 2019, talking about the future of pensions, a vice-president of RQ indicated that annuities could be increased by up to 4%. We can therefore observe that this increase is not guaranteed. Here is an example comparing the Ontario pension insurance offer (very similar to the QPIP we are proposing) and the RQ offer.

A new ERT campaign has recently been deployed to inform the government that we do not agree with their recommendation and we still need the implementation of the QPIP project. Retirees who have worked in Quebec will be solicited.

In recognition, these members will be classed by YPPG as "Honourable Members", as their generosity and extra support of YPPG is greatly needed and appreciated. As some donors do not wish their names to be posted on YPPG's website, we will instead at the Toronto and Montreal Chapter's Annual General Assembly in September 2020, have a lucky draw for a token prize of appreciation, drawn from each Chapter's Honourable Members. Thank you to YPPG's Honourable Members for their generosity.
